To meet rigorous safety standards, they typically apply maximum stress testing for tensile, torsional, breaking strength, grip resistance, end fixings, the works! Sometimes passers-by misinterpret these tests as simple leisure activities. Certainly a negative impact on public relations, but a necessary evil.
